महतां चारित्र्यम्

करे श्लाघ्यस्त्यागः शिरसि गुरुपादप्रणयिता

मुखे सत्या वाणी विजयि भुजयोर्वीर्यमतुलम्।

हृदि स्वच्छा वृत्तिः श्रुतमधिगतं च श्रवणयोः

विनाप्यैश्वर्येण प्रकृतिमहतां मण्डनमिदम्॥

एतस्य अन्वयम् अर्थं च पश्यामः। अन्वयक्रमे केचन स्तराः सन्ति। तेषां स्तराणाम् नामानि अधो निर्दिष्टानि।

श्लाघ्यः त्यागः करे – praiseworthy giving in one’s hand, गुरुपादप्रणयिता शिरसि – the teacher’s feet at one’s head, सत्या वाणी मुखे – the sound of truth in one’s mouth, अतुलम् वीर्यम् भुजयोः विजयि – immeasurable courage in one’s arms which bring victory, स्वच्छा वृत्तिः हृदि – clean conscience in one’s heart, अधिगतम् श्रुतम् श्रवणयोः च – and proper understanding/assimilation of that which is heard in one’s ears, ऐश्वर्येण विना अपि – even though without opulence/wealth, प्रकृतिमहताम् इदम् मण्डनम् (अस्ति) – this is the decoration of great persons

तात्पर्यम्

This shloka praises the natural ease with which great souls act as they live and walk in a world that often seems turbulent, even distasteful at times. What are some of the qualities we could imbibe from such people? Well, here are a few hints the shloka gives us: they’re always ready to give (up) things they may hold dear to themselves. They respect their teachers and mentors who have guided them. They aren’t deceitful. They bring immeasurable strength that brings victory with it. Their conscience is often clean, knowing they did their best. Finally, they have a proper understanding of what they’ve learned (or heard), applying this in their lives to serve others better. Though they may not be blessed with material wealth, these are the ornaments of such fabulous characters.
