। Who Is The Rarest Gem in The World?

Written by:

न अगुणी गुणिनम् वेत्ति – one imbued in vices does not know the virtuous, गुणी गुणिषु मत्सरी (अस्ति) – one who is virtuous is jealous of others who may be even more virtuous, गुणी च गुणरागी च – one who is both virtuous and is only fond of virtues, विरलः सरलः जनः (अस्ति) – is a rare and simple person

This subhāṣitam describes the truly virtuous. Those who are beset by vices don’t know the virtuous because their lives are imbued in sin. Those who are virtuous are also guilty of being jealous of those who are even more virtuous than themselves. This is because such virtuous people want to do more good deeds. But, a simple person who is both virtuous and only interested in virtues – that person is truly rare in this world.
